EULOGY (Noun)


Mnemonic trick- The word eulogy contains two words ‘eu’ and ‘log’. It can be memorized by thinking that it is made up of two words ‘Europe’ and ‘log’. Hindi word ‘log’ means people. People of developed countries of Europe give a eulogy at the funeral. Therefore, eulogy means high praise, written or spoken usually about someone who has died or who has completed his service.

Synonym- ENCOMIUM, PANEGYRIC, PAEAN, COMMENDATION

  • ·         Eulogy is a praise that is usually too much and too late.

ELEGY (OR THRENODY) (Noun)

Meaning- A poem or song that expresses sorrow for someone who is dead.

Mnemonic trick- The word elegy contains word ‘leg’. When someone dies in a road accident because of cutting off his leg. We give elegy at his funeral. Therefore, elegy means a poem or song that expresses sorrow for someone who is dead.

Synonym- DIRGE, REQUIEM

Uses-
  •          Thomas gray wrote a famous elegy that is often quoted at funeral.
  •         The politician delivered a eulogy for his former friend. In his eulogy, he quoted a lovely elegy which had been written more than a century ago.
